뉴욕 강력반 경찰인 샘 타일러는 연쇄살인범이 경찰 파트너이자 연인인 마야를 납치한 사건을 수사하던 중 교통사고를 당하게 되고 눈을 떠보니 그 곳은 자신이 듣고 있던 음악 Life on Mars의 데이비드 보위가 활동하던 1973년의 뉴옥, 신기하게도 샘은 1973년에도 같은 구역에 배치된다. 그곳 경찰에 투입돼 사건을 해결해가며, 자신에게 일어난 상황을 알아내고자 노력한다.
