어느날 인간보다 더 진화된 미지의 거대 포유동물이 바다 곳곳에서 출현하기 시작한다. 군대는 오랫동안 이 존재를 연구해온 과학계의 이단 아인 박사를 중심으로 연구를 진행하면서 사람들에게 진실을 숨기려고 노력하고, 해양생물 학자인 여주인공과 다이버인 남주인공은 진실을 밝히기 위해 목숨을 건다. 이 와중에 외계생물의 알을 채집한 어린 소년들이 부화된 새끼를 키우면서 이야기는 예측할 수 없게 진행되어 가는데...
고래모다 거대한 몸집, 심해와 수면을 자유로이 오가는 불가사의한 신체구조, 강력한 전기 발생, 초음파 언어, 다이아몬드 보다 단단한 껍질, 게다가 인간보다 더 높은 지능.. 이들은 외계에서 온 존재인가, 아니면 지구 내부 깊숙한 곳에 태고적부터 숨어살던 존재들인가... 이제 인간이 멸종할 때가 된 것인가...
